Why I Photograph...

Photography is something that is highly attainable for anyone, which is why I like it. I think it's interesting that anyone can take a picture-it just takes certain skills for those pictures to become art. While these skills can be natural, I also think these skills can be learned. In photography, it is the content of the picture and the way this content is arranged within the photograph that distinguishes a good photographer from a great one, instead of the manner in which they are captured. I also like the fact that photography expresses the world as it is truly seen. There are ways to manipulate this view, through tools like photoshop or styles of photography like macro. However, the subjects of photographs are not changed based on the artist's perceptions or ideas, but are captured as they existed.

The photography I do now is black and white film. It is not a form of photography seen too often as digital photography has taken center stage. Black and white film also gives the opportunity for double exposure, a style of photography I focused on this year. This was a style of photography introduced to me in my second year of photography. I found the outcome of such pictures to be intriguing in a way that most of my previous photographs were not. At the start of the year, the double exposure I did was used to convey an idea in the form of a story, which is how double exposure is often used. After a while, I began to think of ways to use double exposure in a less conventional way. Instead of telling a story, I started to use double exposure to bring texture into my pictures. I have only begun to experiment with this idea, as can be seen my some of the photos on my site. I think this could make most photographs more interesting, especially when the subject of the photography is hidden within the textures of the background.
